Pupils at Wangu Comprehensive Primary and Junior School in Dandora are set to gain practical environmental education through a new waste management farm launched by Zoomlion Kenya Waste Services Limited as part of activities marking Mazingira Day 2026.
The initiative seeks to demonstrate how organic waste can be converted into nutrient-rich compost for sustainable agriculture while equipping learners and surrounding communities with skills in recycling, environmental conservation and food production.
The launch brought together Nairobi County Woman Representative Esther Passaris, Zoomlion Kenya Head of Operations for Nairobi Kenneth Kumi, school headteacher Wachira Kagunya, local leader Julius Were and other stakeholders.

The farm is designed to serve as a practical learning centre where schoolchildren, young people and women-led enterprises can learn composting techniques, sustainable farming and other environmentally friendly practices.
By introducing waste recovery and food production within a school setting, the project aims to promote responsible waste disposal and demonstrate how materials often discarded as rubbish can be reused to support agriculture and community livelihoods.
The initiative also seeks to reduce the volume of organic waste sent to disposal sites, which face growing pressure from urban waste generation, while advancing a circular economy in which discarded materials are recovered and put to productive use.
Its establishment in Dandora places environmental education at the centre of community-level efforts to address waste management challenges in Nairobi.
The launch formed part of Zoomlion Kenya's Mazingira Day activities, which included a school tour, corporate social responsibility engagement and environmental awareness activities aimed at encouraging responsible waste disposal, recycling and tree planting.
The company said the project reflects its broader approach to linking waste collection and clean-up operations with waste recovery and community participation in environmental protection.
The farm also presents an opportunity to introduce young people to green skills and potential entrepreneurship opportunities as communities explore practical responses to environmental challenges.
Passaris' participation brought public leadership into the initiative, which combines private-sector involvement with educational and community engagement.
The project comes amid continued calls for collective responsibility in keeping Nairobi clean, with environmental initiatives increasingly focusing on public awareness and participation alongside waste collection and disposal services.
Through the initiative, Zoomlion Kenya is promoting the message that waste management requires collaboration among government, businesses, schools and residents.
As Kenya marked Mazingira Day on October 9, 2026, the launch highlighted the role educational institutions can play in nurturing environmental awareness among the next generation and translating conservation lessons into practical action.
