KIAMBU, Kenya – Huawei Kenya has intensified efforts to promote cybersecurity awareness and equip young people with practical information and communication technology (ICT) skills as the country accelerates its digital transformation.

The technology company hosted a Cybersecurity Awareness and ICT Competition at Kiambu National Polytechnic, bringing together students, government officials and technology stakeholders to discuss digital safety, innovation and the growing importance of developing a skilled workforce to support Kenya's expanding digital economy.

The event was attended by National Cybersecurity Authority Chairperson Dr Martin Koyabe, officials from the Ministry of ICT and the Digital Economy, and Huawei Kenya Director of Policy and Partnerships Adam Lane.

The initiative comes at a time when Kenya is increasingly embracing digital technologies across government services, financial transactions, education, healthcare and business operations, creating new opportunities while exposing individuals and institutions to emerging cyber threats.

Speaking during the event, Dr Koyabe underscored the importance of strengthening cybersecurity awareness, particularly among young people, who are increasingly interacting with digital platforms for education, communication and economic activities.

He emphasised the need for a digitally informed population capable of identifying online threats, protecting personal information and using technology responsibly.

Koyabe noted that cybersecurity should not be treated solely as a responsibility of government institutions and technology companies but as a shared obligation involving individuals, learning institutions and the private sector.

He further highlighted the importance of equipping students with relevant digital competencies to enable them to participate meaningfully in Kenya's technology-driven economy.

The cybersecurity awareness programme provided an opportunity for students to understand the risks associated with digital platforms and the importance of adopting safe online practices.

These include protecting personal information, recognising suspicious online activities, using secure passwords and remaining vigilant against cybercrime.

Huawei Kenya Director of Policy and Partnerships Adam Lane highlighted the importance of investing in young people's technological capabilities as the demand for ICT professionals continues to grow.

Lane noted that collaboration between technology companies, government institutions and educational establishments remains essential in preparing students for the evolving demands of the digital economy.

He emphasised the role of industry-led initiatives in complementing classroom education by exposing learners to practical technological applications and emerging industry trends.

Through its ICT Competition, Huawei seeks to provide students with opportunities to demonstrate their technical abilities, develop innovative solutions and gain exposure to technologies that are shaping the future of the global digital landscape.

The competition also seeks to strengthen the connection between academic training and industry requirements, ensuring that graduates possess practical skills that can translate into employment and entrepreneurship opportunities.

The involvement of Kiambu National Polytechnic provided a platform for students to engage with industry players and government representatives on the opportunities and challenges associated with technological advancement.

The institution's participation also highlighted the growing role of technical and vocational education and training institutions in producing skilled professionals capable of supporting the country's digital ambitions.

As Kenya continues to expand its digital infrastructure, the demand for professionals in cybersecurity, software development, artificial intelligence, cloud computing and other technology-related fields is expected to remain significant.

However, the growing dependence on digital systems has also heightened concerns about cyberattacks, online fraud, identity theft and the misuse of personal information.

Strengthening cybersecurity awareness among young people is therefore increasingly important in building a population that can navigate the digital environment safely while contributing to the protection of critical information systems.

Huawei's initiative forms part of its broader commitment to supporting ICT development through skills training, knowledge transfer and partnerships with educational institutions.

The company has continued to position ICT skills development as an important pillar of digital transformation, particularly in preparing young people for opportunities emerging from technological innovation.

By combining cybersecurity awareness with practical ICT training and competition, the initiative seeks to encourage students to move beyond being consumers of technology and become innovators, problem-solvers and contributors to the digital economy.

The engagement also reinforced the importance of collaboration between the public and private sectors in addressing the country's growing demand for digital skills while promoting a secure and inclusive technology ecosystem.

As Kenya works towards strengthening its position as a regional technology hub, initiatives targeting students and young professionals are expected to play a critical role in building the expertise required to sustain digital growth.

The Huawei-led programme ultimately highlighted the need to place cybersecurity awareness and practical ICT education at the centre of youth empowerment, ensuring that the next generation is not only prepared to embrace technological opportunities but also equipped to protect the digital spaces in which they operate.
